O Mickey B, I have seen you in my dreams, standing on a board in the river, paddling
to places I’d like to be with you, hold your hand like a hole in a rock wall
crumbling to sand—I know this world will drop us like we can’t hold on—
we can’t hold on to what is gone,
and it’s all going.

Crouching on the dock, I pull you up out of the lake, the water beads on
your hips and shoulders glow like Christmas lights reflecting from
the bar behind us watches two butt naked people in the dusk
standing there, jus talkin’, like we never left the garden, and we
never got the memo we should feel ashamed.

All I have for you my darling wonder: wonder, ‘How does love awake
so easily and sleep so violently inside us pretending
that we aren’t the same?’ Are we the same?
Are we the same?

When I went to church, O the priest would talk of love like it was
something for the pure and holy, only those who spoke a name
